SATA RAID Question
For low end RAID controllers like the Adaptec 1420 and 1210, and LSI
Logic MegaRAID SATA line: If someone is running RAID-1 can you remove a drive and hook directly to another SATA controller or do these controllers write something in the low cylinders that prevent them from being used by another, non-RAID controller from a different manufacturer. Any pointers to more detailed information appreciated. Thanks |

Try low-level format in this case, in FreeBSD it is "camcontrol format
da0". In Windows, you can download the open-source "scu" tool, which IIRC also exists in Linux. -- Maxim Shatskih, Windows DDK MVP StorageCraft Corporation http://www.storagecraft.com "Henry Newman" wrote in message ... This does not really answer the original question. What I want to
know is can I remove a drive from an Adaptec or MegaRAID and put into another PC and use the drive and the data (not reformat) or so the controller write something in to low cylinders that prevents it being used by another controller. In general I have found that moving RAID sets from one brand of RAID
controller to another is unlikely to work. Many controllers write the information about the RAID set on to the drives. Henry Newman wrote: This does not really answer the original question. For LSI controllers, you can probably move the drive to a standard
controller and access the data. The controller's disk configuratiyon is stored at the end of the disk. For a RAID 1 volume, the MBR won't include the "configuration" area, so you *should* be OK.
