32 bit apps on 64 bit OS
On a 64 bit OS with a lot more that 4gb of RAM, will different memory hungry 32-bit apps get different chunks of memory to work with, or are they all competing for the same memory? I know the answer in Unix, with free and malloc, and their cousins, hopefully it is the same in Linux. For example, if I even need to run the 32-bit version of photoshop, can I tell it to absolutely max out its memory and not hurt other 32-bit programs? -- Andrew Hall (Now reading Usenet in alt.sys.pc-clone.dell...) |

Even though they're limited to 2 gigs each, if you have 8 gigs you can run multiple apps. But Photoshop has a 64 bit version as well as a 32 bit version. Unless you use plugins that haven't been written for 64 bit yet, no real reason to stick to 32 bit version. Bob |

Not sure if Bob Levine is 100% correct (maybe) but he's correct in the basic premise, more ram is better. In other words, if one had plenty of memory (say unlimited for this discussion), programs would not compete for the same memory (memory block) but in pc's with not enough memory, they might depending on their demands. I can't speak for photoshop but some programs have ram settings or the like (low / high use of resources) but to be honest, I don't see it in many. |

I meant to write "ever" not "even" above. I do not know if I have any 32 bit dependencies in my PS workflow. Bob -- Andrew Hall (Now reading Usenet in alt.sys.pc-clone.dell...) |
