Default RAM problem

Hi all.
I have a P4P800-SE mobo, with 2 GB RAM from S3+ (www.s3plus.com)
Well this is not a raccomended RAM manifacturer from ASUS so it's happen
that my èc does not start and I have to use the HW reset button to start it.
Does anyone knows if there is a setting in RAM configuration of the BIOS
that can help me ?
I'm using BIOS 1010

Thanks

Well, at least the module construction is good. They use
32Mx8 and 64Mx8 chips.

http://www.s3plus.com/datasheet/memo...DDR400_1GB.pdf

There is nothing in vip.asus.com forums on this problem.

I don't really have a solution for you, except to perhaps get
a copy of CPUZ and have a look at the SPD contents.

You can see an example of the text output of CPUZ. It includes
a raw dump of the SPD of the DIMMs.

http://groups.google.ca/group/uk.peo...04e50ec3b478f7

As to a possible theory:

1) POST attempt #1. BIOS crashes while trying to compare the
DIMM characteristics against the info stored in DMI/ESCD.
2) After pressing reset, the BIOS knows it crashed on the last
run. All the BIOS parameters are set to defaults. For whatever
reasons, the BIOS manages to POST and boot.

Do you find that your custom BIOS settings are getting reset ?
Step (2) above could do that, and it would be proof that the BIOS
is using CPR (CPU Parameter Recall).

Post the output of CPUZ.

I have a P4P800-SE mobo, with 2 GB RAM from S3+ (www.s3plus.com)
Well this is not a raccomended RAM manifacturer from ASUS so it's happen
that my èc does not start and I have to use the HW reset button to start
it.

Default RAM problem

Time to buy quality RAM from an approved manufacturer. Yours is a common
problem.

What is the first thing you notice about the manufacturing informatiom
fields starting at hex 0x40 ? It has all been set to 0xFF!
Notice how the manufactuting date is "Week 255" ? This
will drive the BIOS crazy. There is no way to guarantee what
the DMI/ESCD parser will do when it hits those values.

The problem with the content of the SPD, is the first
byte contains 0x80, which means the first 128 bytes of
the SPD contain valid information. If the manufacturer
had set the first byte to 0x40, then the BIOS would not
try to read all the 0xFF bytes.

You can read all about the format of the SPD here. This
is a JEDEC specification.

Maybe you can forward a copy of the JEDEC spec to the folks
at s3plus.com :-) I'm sure they got a good deal on SPD chips
which were OTP (one time programmable) and they won't be able
to fix the DIMMs they still have in stock. A good manufacturer
actually stores a unique serial number inside each DIMM, in
order to keep track of warranty issues. These geniuses are using
the exact same SPD information for each DIMM sold.

Kingston come up ok with separate serial numbers if you don't want to
destroy your budget.

An other question this problem may have influence on a RAID 0 configuration
?
