Default Why so many USB ports?

Brother printer drivers configure USB printers with a number
of separate USB ports available, some of which print OK
while others do not. E.g. my DCP 330C shows:
BRMFC MFL Resources
BRUSB: USB Printer
BRUSB_11: NULL
BRUSB_14: NULL
BRUSB_19: USB Printer

1. Why so many different ports?
2. Can the user tell other than by trial which is fastest?
