Default G-Wireless Router

Hi All,
I have a Demension E 310.....It is about 18 months old. I have a
Belkin G-Wireless Router hooked up to my modem, so that my wife's computer
can work in a part of the house where there is no cable connection.
Last night a Comcast Tech. came to the house to check the cable connection.
We were having to wait a long time to get from web page to web page. He came
in and used a lap top connected straight form the cable modem at my
computer. He said all was fine and left. Then when I put everything back
togeather at my comp. I couldn't access the internet.
I then called Belkin support and after awhIile the tech said I had a problem
with my ip stack. it seems I was getting an ip address that was not from
Comcast. After I hung up with him I removed the Belkin Router and the modem
form my comp.
I then connected my modem straight to my comp. and I was able to get online.
So I then hooked up The Belkin Router, and tried again to get on line. I
wasn't able to too. I checked the ipconfig and it was changed back to the
other ip address. I then disconnected the Belkin and the modem, waited for
about 5 minutes and then hooked up my comp. to the modem. I was then able to
connect to the internet. So is it my ip stack or is it the Belkin Router???
Any and all help greatly appreciated.
Sorry this is so long.

I think it sounds like the ip stack. You might want to read this....

no, not ip stack.

whenever you switch computer on your cable mode,
you must power cycle all devices, the cable modem and the computer and
the router, so they can learn each other. the cable modem only can work
with one mac address at a time. and it remembers the first one it sees.
perhaps your belkin needs to be reset back to factory if the settings
got messed up.

Jay, he did turn everything off for about 5 minutes which should reset
both the modem and router. I admit I'm not 100% sure at this point
but something tells me it's not the router tho I can't be 100% of this
either but Belkin support seem to tell him it was not the router.

Thanks for your replies, sorry about the new thread. But I deleted your
replies when I went to the web site RnR suggested. I haven't a clue about
what to do there. I tried to download the guide but it keeps saying try
again later.
Thanks again..........

it all depends on the way your power sycle everything

remove the power leads from your cable modem and your belkin router and make
sure your pc is switched off, 1st power up your cable modem, when you have
all the lights lit to indicate you are connected to the net, then and only
then should you power up the belkin router, once thats connected and all
relevent lights lit then you can power on your PC and voila you will have a
conection via your router

Thanks for that fixer, however I have done that on 3 different occasions.
All that happens is my ip is changed from comcast ip to an ip from iana.org
169.254.233.191
Looking through Google I did find a site that said , to go to run type in
cmd, then netsh in ip reset.log then restart. I did all that and then
powered down everything waited 5 minutes then restatred everything, Again my
ip was changed . I am really out of my depth now................LOLOL
Thanks anyway for trying........

the 169 ip address is not a real ip address.
that 169 number means that the IP is not attainable.
its as good as 0.0.0.0

sounds like you know that the cable modem is ok since you were able to surf
the internet when connected to it directly.
not certain that you power cycled (turn off, then back on) the cable modem
when you changed the equipment connected to it from being the PC to being
the belkin router.
not certain if your wife's computer is working with the belkin in place
(wireless ok but wired computers have a problem?).
i suggest you reset the belkin router to factory defaults, and then power
cycle everything to see if that solves the problem. the only downside to
resetting the belkin is that you loose your wireless security setting if you
had any.
if you don't know how to reset the belkin router then post the model number
and someone can look it up for you...
if resetting the belkin doesn't help, and you know that your pc works when
directly connected to the cable modem, then it is pretty clear that the
belkin is dead.
