More RAM problem
I want to increase the RAM in my computer, ASUS P7P55D EVO, Intel
i7-860, with 4 x 2GB RAM, Windows 7 Prof, 64 bit. I bought 4x4GB of memory of same maker, same specs, but replacing 2 or 4 of the old memory gave the same result, the computer boots up ok, but Windows stops at the page showing Windows Starting and the central 4 colored flags. I wonder why this is happening. charlie |

I wonder why this is happening. charlie There is a suggestion here, it could have something to do with XMP. http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?...Language=en-us I thought XMP only worked with two sticks present. If you go for four sticks, you may have to disable XMP. The pre-boiled profile with XMP, may be intended for aggressive two stick configurations. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_...le_.28X MP.29 "Also included in the header is the number of DIMMS per memory channel that the profile is designed to support; including more DIMMS may not work well." SO that makes it sound like the XMP tables do have some flexibility in them. I think you might be able to dump the SPD table of one DIMM, using a copy of CPU-Z from cpuid.com . There used to be an option there, to dump the SPD table. Then, if it was an XMP DIMM, you could compare the byte values, to the Wikipedia article, for inspiration. (I always use the "no-install" version of CPU-Z. The download looks big enough for the others, there could be toolbars hiding in there or something. The "no-install" might be a little safer. I have a "toolbar paranoia" by the way...) And just for fun, check section 3.6.2 of your manual, entitled "North Bridge Configuration". There is a Memory Remap Feature and that should be [Enabled]. I'd check that first, before doing anything else. While it shouldn't prevent detection above 4GB, enabling it is supposed to give you the max amount of memory when using an x64 OS. Paul |
