Default amd athlon cpu running at 110 C ?

I have been experiencing spontaneous restarts and blue-screens
recently while running CPU intensive software. I decided to check the
CPU temperatu At startup, BIOS shows a CPU temp of about 40 C, but
within a few minutes it climbs up to 91 C. SiSoft Sandra shows an idle
temp of 96 C and when putting the CPU to work it goes over 110 C!?

Could this be accurate? It sounds to me the CPU wouldn't be able to
run at all with these temperatures. Is there any risk of damage to the
CPU? I have an AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1400 mhz.
