How sad for a classic Compaq fan such as myself... I would suggetst the following: Up the memory as its memory starved. That will buy you time for now. Add a CPU also, since at the very least windows and exchange will benefit from the 2nd CPU. Be careful when updating the HAL ... ive seen [people go about it incorrectly and thus render thier windows installs inoperative. When you get more hardware, peel the DC functions off that box and put it on something else. Preferrably 2 different AD boxes for availability. Each would inherantly be a DNS server. You can do split scope DHCP on each of them if you wish, again for availabililty. You can put the Symantec, visual manufacturing, and goldmine all on one box. Make sure it has enough memory for the job. I am doing exactly as you suggested above. All of these boxes have been modfied and modified, with Server 2003 installed on top of server 2000 on top of NT, with at least two rounds of adding larger disk drives while keeping the old ones, so I decided to one by one migrate the apps to servers with new OS installs. While I am at it I am upgrading RAM, CPU and HDD as appropriate, with an eye to replacing the oldest iron and migrating it to various jobs around the factory like running a test fixture, burning EPROMs, running software to print labels on a spcial lable printer, etc. -- all of which are running on even older iron. I hope to have everything running smoothly and not needing a lot of attention, so I can spend more time designing mnew products. |

IPU (in-place-upgrades) from NT to 2000 to 2003 is not a winning approach. Get 1 piece of swing hardware that you can build up properly with a fresh 2003 load, get it setup, then decom another box and start fresh with it. It sounds like you have a good approach. Let me know if you have any questions. - LC |
