Default compaq presario quick restore fail

Upgraded an old 5340 with a 20 gig drive and some compaq ram from
ebay... used the quick restore cd to start fresh... boots fine, but
after loading the compaq Win 98 SE disc will boot and run a few times
but then gives a registry error message, then says win explorer has
caused a fault and windows will not load. I have a feeling it's the
onboard Mcafee AV but there is no uninstaller and disabling in
msconfig does not stop this thing. Scratching my head with this old
beeyotch.
