Default Problem with an external USB2 HDD...

I bought a Q-TEC 751H USB2 2.5" HDD case:

It works OK in WinXP, but not in W98SE.

In Device Mangler, I get either:

1. 'Generic USB Storage Adapter' with a yellow exclamation mark and no
external drive under 'Hard disk controllers' though the driver is loaded.
Nothing happens except the egg-timer, though the processor is working hard,
and eventually the computer crashes.

or, by trial-and-error, restoring the registry, reloading the driver (though it always
says the best one is already installed) etc.

2. No yellow exclamation mark and the disk showing correctly, in which case
as soon as I try to write to it, the computer crashes.

I suspect that it might be due to the 'PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller'
sharing an IRQ with a Promise IDE Controller. Also, I have 3 instances of
'Via Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller', and 3 of 'USB Root Hub'
as well as a single 'USB 2.0 Root Hub'. Is this right?

If anyone has got one of these Q-TEC cases to work or could help me get mine
to, I'd be be interested to hear. I'd also like to know how to change the IRQ
assignments and what to. I see something about them in the BIOS of my
GA-7VAX, but can go no further.

Suggest you boot to safemode Device Manglersic and clean up all
Device Sections as per,
