Default acer aspire 5000

bought one 13 months ago ( warranty gone..) and suddenly it wont turn
on. the button goes green motor wont run, apparently the connector
to the disc isn{t working but because all one piece hace to change
the whole mother board as per acer representatives in argentina;
worth 400usd al inclusive.
DOES THIS MAKE SENSE AT ALL??????

Config.: AMD Turion 64 ML-30, 1 GB DDR, HD 100 gb/BTY/DVDRW/CBL220/AC
ADAP

please help - a PHD student who invested to avoid these things and 13
months later here I am, in a cybe cafe!
