Default fx5200 agp - flickering display when playing Diablo 2

Hi. I recently installed this 128MB video card on my PC which runs Windows
98SE.
It also has 256MB ram, and a AMD Sempron 1.6Ghz CPU.
I was hoping someone could tell me how to use/set up my card to stop the
flickering
occuring while running Diablo 2 with the 1.09 patch.

Thanx.

I used to use a 5200. I found the 54.xx something or other drivers worked
the best for me at that time. Have you tried some other drivers? Which
version are you using? Also, which specific card are you using? Also, try
disabling some background applicaitons when playing games. Maybe one of them
is causing the flicker.

Hmmn, is it possible DaveW has a point about newer drivers not working as
well as some older ones on older cards in some circumstances?

No. More likely an older game needs an older driver. A 5200 isn't that
old.

The FX series doesn't have any inherent problems with Diablo II/LOD.
I've played it on two different cards and several dozen driver versions
without incident.

The only thing I can possibly think of is that for some damn reason, the
ability for a card to display a game without terrible sheering (which
could be interepreted as flickering) seems to be highly dependent on
several things:

* Manufacturer quality
* Proper monitor .inf and refresh information
* Whether it's forced in the display panel on much older drivers
* Your motherboard chipset

For example, an old GF2MX on a KT133A can play with VSync off without
flickering badly on a junky old monitor I've got, but the same card on
my very old P2-433 cannot.

I mostly only ever had problems with vsync tearing on much older cards,
like the GF2 series and even the TNT 2 Ultra. But later I found that on
flaky motherboard chipsets, the AGP gart driver has a big effect.

But as it is, my FX5700 plays D2 just fine in either D3D or DDraw with
or without vsync on a XP2500/NForce2 system.
