Default SATA eSATA IDE HDD Dock ..HD spinning forever?

Hello...

I am using a Using a DUAL 2.5 3.5 SATA eSATA IDE HDD Dock..with a 1GB
sata 3.5 drive in it.. connected to my home network via Seagate
Dockstar, set up so the drive is working as a NAS drive.

It works OK, and I have no problems accessing it etc ...But even when
my main PC powers down, or the network link is broken the drive seems
to be spinning away..all be it not to the same extent as it does when
it is being used.

Does this mean it will be active for all the time it is powered up,
and thus its expected life will be shorter than if the drive was
inside a case and part of a PC setup. (Win7)

If so is there anything I can do about this..?

Or is it that's just the way it is? Live with it.

Thanks

You live with it, its the nature of a NAS to run like that 24/7. I have had
the same drives running in my DirecTV Tivo boxes 24/7 for over 9 years now.

No. "Spinning" does not really decrease drive lifetime since FDBs
became common. Head-load and unload is a different matter.

Live with it as long as the temperatures are ok.

A typical dock should not come with power management. Does your NAS
manage the power to its eSATA port?
