Networking 2000/XP

Hi,

I'm not very good with computers, so the answer is probably very
simple.

I'm trying to network two computers, one with XP andthe other with
2000. Thery're connectd via a single cable and both computers are
pretty new and fast.

The 2000 computer can see all of the shared folsers on the XP machine,
but the XP machine can not see any of the shared folders on the 2000
machine. It can see that there is a computer there, but will not
access it.

All the access rights have been enabled etc, but now I'm stuck!

Any ideas??

Have you "shared" the drive/folder on the W2k machine?

Open Windows Explorer, R-click on drive, "sharing" and "share this folder".

This is a very typical problem that people might have with their
systems, they dont know whats what so they might accidently get rid of
it.
"You need to make sure on your Win2000 you have Ticked the box for
"File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" which you can find
in properties of your network connection. Like in Control Panel ---
NetworkConnection.
This will stop the other side of your network connection which is your
win xp."

I think i'm having this problem. the desktop (host) says i don't have the
resouces to share with laptop. The internet sharing works but i can't
access files from the desktop even though it can see them.

I used to have the same trouble as my firewall wasn't configured
properley (assuming u have a firewall, if u don't then this post is
pretty much usless). Zonealarm (free) is easy enough to configure for
small lans.
O and don't use icf (internet connection firewall) if ure using ics
(internet connection sharing).

Your post reminded me I had kinda the same problem with a couple machines,
but could not see my win2k box, would not show workgroup machines. I then
tried to give share permissions on the XP box to a HD in Windows Explorer,
but before I could, the workgroup machines showed up in the Network window.
I have no idea why, but mine seems to be working now. Sorry not much help.
It just might be a Microsoft problem. Good luck.

I had a problem similar to this one. The solution may be the same as
mine.
I used to have Wind2K on one machine and WinXP on another, just like
you. Then I decided to switch them around and couldn't get the Win2K
machine's C drive to show up over the network. But what I found
strange was that when I went into the Sharing options for the C drive
the drive seemed to be already set for sharing. Infact, I remembered
seeing this a few months earlier just after I had installed Win2k I
had noticed the C drive was set for sharing. This obviously had me
worried and when I turned off sharing and rebooted my machine the C
Drive would be reset for sharing again. Now after recently trying to
share my C Drive over the network I've come to the conclusion that it
wasn't really set set for sharing afterall, (phew) it was just
Microsoft's way of confusing me.. The way I made my C Drive appear
over the network was to hit the 'New Share' button in the Sharing
options and create a name for it.

Hi all,

I haven't tried out installing NetBEUI for sharing. The default share
in Win2K is for Operating systems' internal administration purposes.
ADMIN$, IPC$, C$ for c drive, D$ for d drive, and so on. To share the
drive/folders, one has to create a new sharing. All the shared
drive/folders can be viewed at Start--Settings--Control
Panel--Administrative Tools--Computer Management--Open up System
Tools-Shred Folders-Shares.
