Compaq Presario 4540 Memory upgrade problems.

I'm having problems upgrading to 48MB. I've tried replacing the 16meg Dimms
with a 32megs dimm but only 8 megs of the card is being recognized.

The 32 meg dimm is a 4x64-10ns 4 chip SDRAM 168 pin 3.3V unbuffered with
eprom.

I've pressed F10 at startup to reset the BIOS but it always indicates only
24MB. I've looked for msconfig but it doesn't exist on my system. I've
looked for the maxpage indication in the System.ini file but it doesn't
exist in there.

The chip is suppose to have come from a Compaq Presario 4540.

Is there some kind of system settting or dip switches I have to set to get
the system to recognise the extra memory?

I am not familiar with your computer, but I have had the same problem
several times on other computers. For me it has always been the memory
module that was at fault. If you have modules in there now that have 8
chips and replace it with one with 4 chips or less, you may have a problems
like that. Make sure the one you are replacing has the same number of chips
as the old one or you are likely to have problems. It is unlikely there are
any switches or CMOS things to set up.
