Default 16 bit ms-dos subsystem errors

Hello, I am in need of some assistance in fixing this problem. The pc
in question is a Celeron, running XP Home.
When I try to open any programs, I get the following for example: c:
\documents and settings\allusers\desktop\malwarebytes
antimalware.ink the NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction
cs:0538 ip:0176 op:632c 6c 75 close or ignore.
When I try to use the control panel I get: c:\windows
\system32\rundll32.exe the parameter is incorrect
I am unable to run any a\v software to see if it's virus related. Any
help would be great.

Boot into the safe mode and see if Malwarebytes will run. If not, try
downloading it while still in safe mode and re-install it and see if it
will run then.

Possibly booting from the XP install cd and doing a repair install might
help

Another method would be to boot one of the Live Linux CD's and run an
anti-virus program from that.

Sorry for the long delay in responding. I did manage to get MBAM to
run in safe mode,
It turned out that the system was infected with multiple spywares.
After a little cleaning up, all is well again.
Thanks for your efforts in this matter.
