Default Presario 5095CL CPU Upgrade

I have this system with a Duron 900, 512MB RAM, and a BFG Ti4200. I
want to put an Athlon XP 1800+ that I have in it, but I am not sure if
it will work in this board or not, and Compaq's site doesn't list
voltages for the chipset, or what possible upgrades it will take. I can
live if it doesn't work, but I really don't want to fry the CPU if I
can help it. Thanks in advance.

Sorry. No workee. although the chipset is not listed, Quikspecs for your
model show it is limited to a 200MHz system bus. The Athlon XP requires a
266MHz bus, if memory serves. I had the same situation with my Presario
4090US. It could go only to a 1.3GHz Duron.

It probably won't work, but not for the reason HH says. The XP runs
at a 200 mghz system bus. I'm not sure where he got 266 from. I
believe he's talking about the RAM bus. Meaning, your Duron runs a
133 RAM bus and you need 266 RAM for it. Incidentally; the XP you
have, runs at the same bus speed and uses the same RAM. That's a
plus.

I don't think you'll fry the CPU however. If anything, it'll probably
run slow.

The problem with OEM computers, is their mobo's are made just for the
model they're going to be in. They don't pay for anything they don't
have to.

The best bet is to check the system bios and see if there are any
adjustments. I'll bet there aren't. If there's no jumper to zero
the bios, it'll just assume it's what they said and run your XP the
same speed as the Duron.

Hey, the XP is a 62 dollar chip. You made the call. I've risked
components for far more.

Let me know how you make out.
