Default Compaq Deskpro DPEND

I have been reading posts on this forum and find it to be a wealth of
information. I will freely admit that I'm a total neophyte when it
comes to the internal working of a computer, but I'd love to learn as
it fasinates me.
Anywho, I was given a couple of older Compaq's recently and I'd like
some info. :?
The larger one is a Compaq Deskpro DPEND P450/6.4/w5nn US.
Serial number 6923 CKN6 A329. I have removed the case and found the
blue ink markings telling me it's inservice date of April 16, 1999.
From reading postings on this site, I know that this is a Pentium 3
with 450 MHZ and 6.4 GB Hard Drive. There does not appear to be an
operating system because I do not get a Windows logo when I start it.
The computer was used by a local golf course and it appears to be a
work station or network unit. What can I run on this for an operating
system? If anyone can tell me more about this unit and what I can do
to bring it close to 2005 standards, I'd love to know.

TIA

Thanx Ben. I have no problem with the RAM but what Hard Drive do you
think is best? I've been looking at some on eBay and the like, and I
also see that some of these EN's are 850 or 1000 MHZ. Any suggestions
on where I might find one other than the online auctions.

6.4GB is a little constraining even for Windows 2000. I've upgraded the hard
drive in my Windows 2000 notebook to 10GB for that reason. Something in the 15
to 20GB range should suffice.

The newer DeskPro ENs are Socket 370 with faster CPU speeds, rather than the
Slot 1 system which is what I suspect you have... Ben Myers

Can you help me out with who's varitey of hard drive you'd reccommend.
I have researched many of them out there, but cannot get a firm answer
if it will work in the desktop I have. Need specifics if I can get
'em.

Thanx,

Fujitsu and Seagate seem to have the best reliability records nowaways. Western
Digital, Maxtor, and Samsung are sold in mass market retailers, and are somewhat
spotty. Of the three, I tend to favor Western Digital.

A drive which has an IDE/ATAPI interface and 3.5" form factor will do.
