My laptop just started making a helicopter type sound. It is coming
from under the keypad. Could the fan be seizing up? Has anyone had a
similiar problem?

No, look for the vent, it's usually in the top back, or the back. If
it's directly below, yes, it's time to have her opened up.

If the vent is on the back, and you're sure where the sound is coming
from, it may be a hard drive about to pack up. Normally, this
wouldn't be the case, you usually have no warning when a hard drive
packs up.

Perhaps someone leaned on it or something. Check to make sure the
plastic all lined up. If not, a gentle hit can sometimes set it back
to where it belongs. Be careful.

Hope this helps

I have tried to gve a little "love tap", but the noise is still there.
I looked for the fan vent and it is in the back. The sound is coming
from under the keypad, so I guess it is not the fan. Oh well, guess I
need to take it in.

I took it to the PC Clinic by my house and sure enough it is the hard
drive. Anyone know how hard it is to put a hard drive in a laptop? I
don't want to spend the money on labor. Any advice would be
appreciated!!

More difficult than a desktop. It requires partial disassembly of the
notebook down to removing the keyboard. The HD resides directly underneath
that. Probably best left to a service tech.

Generally, it's pretty simple. There's usually a slide latch with a
screw in it keeping if from being opened. Once the screw is out, the
door will open. The drive will just pop out.

If you don't know how to format one, buy one pre-formatted.

Best of Luck
