Default 32 or 64 bit - which?

The general rule of thumb on any new technology seems to be, don't get
it until it's several years old. It'll be better, way cheaper, and
most of the bugs in the original design will have been worked out.

64-bit computing sounds exciting, but there's AFAIK only one OS for it
(Windows XP-64, and maybe one flavor of LINUX) and it's only been
around for a few years. Also, the bulk of new systems and software out
there are still the 32-bit kind. There's also the question of how well
existing peripherals (modems, sound cards, etc.) would work with the
new technology.

Should I stick with the existing 32-bit standard, or take the plunge
and go with current 64-bit gear? I would appreciate any feedback that
you can give me.
