Presario 5BW130 HDD Install Problem
Matthew S Gillettewrote:
After tossing the old hard drive, I can't get this new Maxtor to take WINXP. I just want to load XP and start from scratch. Everything loads fine for copying, but on the first reboot before installing Windows, this Compaq can't seem to boot through. Is it missing bios info on a non-dos partition or something? I've only tried to boot to CD and am using WINXP partitioning/formatting. I can't find any Compaq bootable disk files which will setup this HDD for an OS. Am I missing something glaringly obvious. Thank you in advance for any help. 5BW130 5000 Series Compaq PC Celeron 667/66 MHz 256 MB sys rom date: 11.17.00 sysrom family: 686c3 chassis serial #:xxxxxxxxxxxx I know this sounds silly, but did you take the installation CD out of the drawer? It sounds like it's booting to the ROM drive over and over. |

Yeah, I forgot to tell: the CD and any other media were removed from the drive before rebooting. It sounds incredible, but that sort of things use to happen with Compaq PC's. -- korcky |

They're set up to boot Floppy, CD, then hard drive. A lot of them don't even have the floppy, this has kind of snuck up on us. |

You are right, but the booting problem happened to me even though I had set previously the right booting order (the HD first) in the BIOS setup and removed the installation CD before rebooting: It always tried to boot from the CD, because that drive was in the connector labeled 0 on the IDE cable connected to the primary slot. It was not until I swapped connections with the CD and HD when it finally recognized the HD as the master device. -- korcky |

Presario 5BW130 HDD Install Problem
The cause of this problem in a Presario 5000 I was working on was that
the hard disk was on the secondary IDE channel. Worked fine with W98 and Wme but with xp caused the NTLDR not found message. Changed cables and re ran the installation program and .... hey Presto! Bob's your Uncle etc. all working fine. Thanks for the many posts here that clued me in and saved heaps of time. |
