Compaq Presario 5WV294 and win98
one other thing ... I had an old clone pc that I scavenged for parts
and it had a store-bought copy of win98 with it! I loaded that and used compaq/ drivers.com website drivers to get nic and video going. BUT ... it sees USB ports but doesn't sense anything when I plug in a usb drive. here's my question ... I remember that SOME versions of Win98 had USB support and others didn't - how can I tell if it's the version vs a bios/hw/driver issue ( compaq/hp site made no mention of usb drivers). I thought seeing USB root hubs was good - but I never was a user of win98 to know "what's normal". Assuming that usb support IS ok, any reason why it wouldn't sense 512mbUSB mem stick? ( that I thought I'd use to load the nic drivers. ) It now boots , network and video OK, but no CDRW nor DVD sw - oh well. I would like to have the USB ports work before returning it to her - the rest of the sw is gonna be up to her - I TOLD her to back it up or buy the restore CD's when it was new!! "- Bobb -" wrote in message . .. I know this thread is 2 years old , BUT I was just asked by a friend to help her with her PC. This is the model number on the big sticker on the side ( that they never removed ??) and the 40gb drive was formatted ( I don't know the details but only a blank C partition now). She said that it had Win2000 shipped with it and of course, she has only the quickrestore CD - and since no D partition to data to recover , it's a boat anchor. It's a 1ghz AMD athlon with 128 mb of mem and she'd be better off to spend $250 for a new one but they don't have the money and it would cost $100 to even put an OS on it. I told her I'd try to help her out but no promises. So ... any dealers (we're near Boston) out there that have old restore CD's for these ?? Any online pointers ? I checked Ebay, Compaq website, google etc and looking for pointers on where she might find CDs for this thing ? for cheap money Worst case, does someone know ... does it HAVE to be a AMD restore set ? If so , how would I know by looking at the CD's since I can't find a part number for them online ? What I'm getting at - if I find someone tossing an old Intel based presario - that had recovery CD's - would those CD's work ? Thanks, Bobb "Robert W. Rafferty" wrote in message ... My wifes computer was having a problem in that it would go to the sign on (XP Professional), and then reboot after you sign on. I took the 40Gig Drive and put it in slot 2, and bought a new 80Gig Seagate Drive and put it in slot 1. I then used the 3 disk CD recovery set and loaded it on the new drive (or so I thought). The computer works fine down, but I noticed that all my information is gone off the slot 2 drive (original drive) . I originally had planned to move her files over to the new drive and also her address book, and email and use the old drive for storage. Does the recovery disk format the second drive also? If not, what do I need to do to see this data now? |

Windows 98SE has USB support. Not sure about Windows 98 First Edition, 'cause
I've tried to avoid it and have succeeded to the extent that I can remember very little about it. The older USB 1.0 ports sometimes work but often do not with even low power USB thumb drives. USB 2.0, introduced with later Pentium 4 Socket 478 systems, handles all manner of devices which require power from the USB connector. The USB drive problem is most likely because the USB ports are too darn old. To test if the USB is working or not, plug in a USB mouse or keyboard, both known to work well with USB 1.0. I have a Pentium 3 notebook here that absolutely refuses to read a USB thumb drive, but earlier today I worked on an older Compaq Pentium 2 or 3 computer that handled a thumb drive perfectly, making it easy to transfer files to another computer... Sorry - I should have noted that it is Win98SE that I installed.
I don't have any usb kb/mice to try but I'm thinking that you're right about "not knowing what this thing is". If I leave it in at boot time I get a blue screen with Vxd error - have to hard power off. Reboot without the usb drive and boots ok. I'll try pny.com to see if they have an updated driver for the thumb drive. Thanks "Ben Myers" wrote in message ... Windows 98SE has USB support. U would be far better off spending $20 for a USB 2.0 PCI card.

HH I loaded the PNY driver and all is well. PS It wasn't my PC to spend the $$ on and she doesn't have it - which is how I got involved in the first place. |

Compaq Presario 5WV294 and win98
Update:
I did install Win98 Ok but couldn't find any model specific apps. BUT during the holidays, I found another friend with a similiar model ( 5000 series) presario. I used her Easy Cd creator and PowerDVD factory CD's to get the first one going and now EZCD and DVD player work as they should on that second one too.
