Default Presario 6000CL

Having problems with the computer freezing. I talk with tech support, and
they tell me to check in the BIOS for the CPU temp, I do and it is always in
the mid 50;s C. The CPU fan is running but the system fan registers at 0
RPM. Tech support tells me to turn off the system and take it in for
warranty repair which I did and all the did was reformat the HD and
reinstall everything. This was done at COMP USA. I brought it back home and
it still freezes, called them again and they sent me a box to ship it to the
big HP in the sky so it can be fixed (system fan connected or a new one put
in). Well I got it back after 10 days and I am having the same problems.

My question is has anyone else had this problem with this model and if so
have they fixed it?

The only programs that I have installed on it after it came back are the
Gateway USB Wireless adapter, AOL IM, and MSN Messenger. Other than that, it
is a clean a system as it can be.

Thanks

Joe

Uh, did you check for lockups BEFORE you installed said software?

From a command prompt type:chkdsk[space]c:[space]c:\chkdsk.txt[enter].
See what the checkdisk log says about the disk. Google: memtest86 and
run its diagnostics to check RAM. Google: htmonitor that is a system
monitor that will monitor and report CPU and HD temps and fan speeds
that the mainboard supports. Have this open and do a defrag which will
start both a CPU and HD load and monitor the conditions. One of these
might point to whatever is locking the computer. My bet is on RAM.
Have you checked event view logs for repeating errors? Errors in
starting/stopping services and devices not loading are fairly routine
and generally mean nothing.

Try this: from the run command, type: msconfig, select the startup tab.
This lists all of the autostart applications that run in the background.
Some of these might not be essential or desired. Use this site as a
guide to what each of these are doing:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php

Uncheck any that are not essential. Reboot, check the box and cancel the
notification about making system changes. Make a note of the
controlling application, then open that application and from
preferences, tools, options, etc., find the setting to autostart and
disable.
