Default Help: Compaq DeskPro Won't Stay Off

I have a Compaq PC that has a tendency to turn itself back on,
regardless of how I shut it down.

Sometimes it turns itself back on immediately, as if I hit the
restart, and sometimes I'd find it on upon returning back from another
room, the store, from work, or even waking up.

Does this happen to anyone else?

I know nothing short of re-formatting and re-installing is probably
going to fix this, which I intend to do anyway, since it has WindowsME
installed, but I thought I'd ask if anyone had a solution to stopping
this from happening.

Thanks a lot.

Sounds like WOL or WAKE ON LAN is on in the bios.

Just guessing you have it on a network.

I would throw it in the river before you end up in the TV and some fat lady
walking through your house saying "this room is clear".

No it is not on a network, and I've never gone into the BIOS and
changed anything.

The PC has been turning itself back on for the last couple of months,
and not at any consistent amount of time after it is turned off.

Thanks.

Yes a smart and wise action... uh ya... ok...

You probably have the WOL or something of that nature on your system... Do
you have it connected to high speed internet? If so, even if you don't have
a network, your machine will start on a signal, any signal, from the high
speed modem...

It is not on a network, and I have 56k(and crappy POTS). I never
messed with any settings.

The PC has been turning itself back on about 75% of the time for the
last couple of months, and not at any consistent amount of time after
it is turned off.

Thanks.

An outside possibility comes to mind, there are some systems that not
only have WOL, but Wake On Ring (WOR) with the appropriate modem installed.
Could this be the source of this unusual behavior? Try physically
disconnecting the telephone line when you are not using it and see if this
solves the problem.

Interesting possibility. Going further, such a modem might have become
defective, waking the unit when there is no reason to wake the unit. Might
even pull the modem to see if it corrects the problem....

Yep, she/he should go into the bios and look for Wake On X settings

Thanks.
