Default RAM Buying advise

can anyone advise me on how to buy ram from ebay ..

There's getting to be all kind of different types IE.
SIMMS DIMMS SDRAM

and I'm a bit in the dark in terms of things like bus speed downward
compatability.

Can I buy a higher bus speed thtn I need so that I can use it in a
machine I might purchase in the future?

specifically I' presently looking for 64 -128 Megs for a compaq
deskpro 4000 mmx (168 pin).

I'm looking for "pre-owned" RAM for my pre-owned computer.. I
don't want to spend more on the ram than I did on the box. It's mostly
for an internet dialup internet hookup but 32 megs of RAM is making it
a real Tortoise (and killing the HD).

So I was hoping to gain some insight into type compatability before I
buy..
I'm wondering even though crucial and compaq say advise using up to
128 meg chips is it possible to go higher to say 512 since the
technology has advanced since then

it seems I need pc66 non parity up to 128 meg SDRAMs

but I'm wondering can I use pc100 or pc133 etc. or even higher.

and should I accept or reject ECC even if it's real cheap.. (I know
it's slower but will it work?)

I would not recommend buying RAM for a Compaq from anywhere you can't return
it.

Specifically, see
http://www.crucial.com/library/sfiles6.asp

which says, in part:

"You can use PC133 memory in a PC100 system and you can use PC100
memory in a 66MHz system. However, the memory will only run as fast as
the motherboard is capable of handling. For example, your PC133 module
will run at PC100 speed in a system with a 100MHz bus.

"Some people will buy PC133 memory for systems that don't support
PC133 SDRAM with the intent to upgrade the system at a later date with
a motherboard supporting PC133 memory. That way, you can simply take
the memory out of your old system and use it in the new one."

WHich, unfortunately, is not always true on some models of Compaq.

Correct. There are MANY laptops spec'ed for PC100 memory that absolutely
will not BOOT with PC133 memory installed. So the concept of buying PC133
memory to use in your current laptop in order to use it in your next one
when you upgrade is seriously flawed.

Besides the fact that most of us buy less than incremental increases in our
laptop upgrades, e.g. going from a PIII 850MHz to a Pentium M 1.5GHz. One
used PC100 memory, the new one uses PC2700!

Regards,

James

PC133 256mb sticks did not run in my 5660, just as Tom said.
