Default Are Dell batteries proprietary

Just curious. I have an Inspiron 2200.

Eventually, I'll need a new battery.

Do I need to get it directly from Dell or is there a better (ie: cheaper but
same or better quality) source??

For all practical purposes, the batteries are proprietary. Sometimes it is
possible to identify a battery that is common between a Dell model and another
brand, but I would not count on it. There are 3rd party companies (e.g. fedco)
selling all manner of batteries, both original equipment and refurbished with
new battery cells... Ben Myers

you could try asking the same question in uk.comp.sys.laptops NG as there
was some bloke there selling batteries that he imported from china from the
same manufacturer that makes batteries for Dell, IBM, Sony ~And Toshiba for
a fraction of the price
