Presario 1525US
I started experiencing total system shutdowns about 3 months after installing
the Aquarium screen saver on my Presario notebook. This would happen about 10 minutes after the fish started swimming. I took it be a power management problem and played with the settings... no change from what I could see. OK, I so I don't need fish! Now I can duplicate the system shutdown with any program which maxes the CPU/ memory for more that 5 minutes, running intense memory tests in the diag mode or running random drive seeks. One day I was checking Spybot and 3/4 of the way through it quit. I've been checking event logs, system logs, disabling Norton: no effect. I thought about reinstalling the power management software and opened a ticket with Compaq. "Techs are not responding", was the message. =) Anyone seen or heard about this kind of problem? All ideas entertained, hardware of software. (Note: I can reboot the system and do everything else: Web stuff, mail, print, Office apps, you name it. ) - pack |

That eats massive processor and memory. Tough to tell. The thing always ran hot and the fans definitely respond to the demands. I can tell you this: When the problem occurs, the fans are tach'd right up there is the high speed mode. The latest thing that happened is that the system shut down during the installation of the new keyboard controller firmware. The factory told me to update both that and the BIOS (already done, previously). Now they want me to ship it back under warranty because they feel it is a hardware problem. Right now, back at square one. I can send mail, browse and, of course post to newsgroups. Life is almost good. Thanks for any help. =) - pack |

Yup, I had a problem also with that screensaver on my 1525US. However not
the same as you. My problem would be the first time the screensaver came on, you would hear the sound that goes with it, but if you stopped the screensaver and then when the screensaver would come back on, all of a sudden there would be no audio. The only way to get audio to come back with the screensaver would be to reboot. I think it's a problem with the software quite frankly. You are not the first person to complain about it. If you haven't already done so, ditch it! "Packrat" wrote in message ... I just pointed out that example because it is the most consistent "way" initiating a power shut down on my notebook. Hopefully, the more examples I have, the easier it will be for the factory to troubleshoot it. I tried all the various "fixes" I found here plus the ones given by tech support group. Actually, I did better with the email than the phone experience from India. No offense, but I have enough trouble hearing phone conversations in the next county, leave alone the ones from overseas. Thanks again. - pack |

... So what was the answer to your fix? No fix as yet.. tried all suggestions listed in another thread plus customer service suggestions. They are sending me an RMA box for shipment back to repair. They believe it to be a hardware problem, but can't be sure. I think it is a heat induced problem. I have posted in another thread regarding Compaq service, fyi Last evening I received a questionnaire from HP regarding same and an offer to receive gift certificate. Am busily trying to build another drive with all my data. ;-) - pack |

I'm having this same problem with my presario notebook (P4). Luckily it is
under warranty... I'm going to take it back to CompUSA where I bought it and see what they say... I will let you know if they have any ideas that nobody else has thought of yet. I notice mine first using Hoyle's Casino game software. The fan is maxed out on mine too, right before it shuts down. Sounds like the exact same problem... "Packrat" wrote in message ... I have declined because I need the machine this month for work. I can avoid the problem by just doing what I'm doing and use another workstation for music, etc. What infuriated me was the double talk about the warranty. First they said I could pay to extend it, then they said no because " it was manufactured before the merger".... HUH? I must have called 5 numbers and finally got a confirmation from their legal/contract team who said, No, sorry, goodbye. As a former systems engineer/test engineer I will fix this damn thing myself. Oh yeah, it's a heatsink/fan thing, according informed sources. - pack (disgruntled with HP/Compaq) |

I just tried out some advice I got in another posting on this problem and it
worked great.... see the posting entitled "Presario 1500 powers off spontaneously" "Packrat" wrote in message ... "Jpearl" wrote in message . com...
