I am trying to salvage some data from a Compaq 5192 hdd . I put the hdd into another PC, and BIOS checks the drive ok. Windows on the other hand does not recognize the parition. I guess its because of the compaq paritition on the hdd ? Shouldn't be. Either partition table on HDD is shot, or the BIOS on the current machine recognises or translates the HDD differently (not all IDE controllers use the same scheme). In former case HDD is useless unless you know exactly how the HDD was partitioned (and I mean byte-exact) - ín that case you could salvage it with PartitionMagic on the new machine. Be sure to try PartitionMagic anyway. If it's the latter, make sure controller chips for both machines are the same. Of course, in most cases, it'll be an Intel chipset on the motherboard anyway that controls the HDD. So this is useful only if you used a different controller or your Compaq had a different chipset (VIA, SiS etc.) Grtz, O Thanks for the input. For some reason my abit vp6 with hpt370 controller didn't let WinXp populate the partition table on the actual drive. I tried it a couple more times and got it to work, I was able to salvage all of the data from the hdd onto another drive . Thanks guys. |
