Vista characteristics?

I see a lot of talk about MS Vista... 1) Does anyone know if it has dealt with the .dll mess in one folder where any misbehaved application installer can alter system files? 2) In the mainframe world they ask, "Did you have a three-digit year or a four-digit year?" IOW, was your annual downtime 0.001% or 0.0001%? Can we expect Vista to perform in this range, or are we still going to restart the computer when an application is installed? Not to mention adding a device via cardbus, Firewire or USB. 3) Will Vista be so fat and loaded with unused features that it'll require more RAM and boot time than XP? Of course, if it only has to start once a year, the latter is not an issue. :=) 4) Will it have an arsenal of ways to prevent my choice of anti-virus and firewall software, and other non-MS application software, from running well or running at all? 5) Does it include firewall software that checks outbound packets? 6) Will Vista Explorer, or whatever it's called, be able to burn data files to a DVD without third party software (such as Roxio Creator LE supplied by Dell)? --David Peter Gutmann, http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut00...vista_cost.txt Last updated 22 December 2006 Executive Summary ----------------- Windows Vista includes an extensive reworking of core OS elements in order to provide content protection for so-called "premium content", typically HD data from Blu-Ray and HD-DVD sources. Providing this protection incurs considerable costs in terms of system performance, system stability, technical support overhead, and hardware and software cost. These issues affect not only users of Vista but the entire PC industry, since the effects of the protection measures extend to cover all hardware and software that will ever come into contact with Vista, even if it's not used directly with Vista (for example hardware in a Macintosh computer or on a Linux server). This document analyses the cost involved in Vista's content protection, and the collateral damage that this incurs throughout the computer industry. http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut00...vista_cost.txt |

Has anyone at the University of Auckland, or elsewhere, written a critique of your paper? --D |
