Default HP 2550L running spontaneously (connected to Airport Extreme Basestation)

Hi NG,

I have a HP 2550L that starts running spontaneously. By running, I mean
that it makes whirring noises and sounds like when I turn it on. Then it
goes silent for hours only to suddenly starts making noise again - its
woken me up several times.

Its connected to an Airport Extreme Basestation. Firewall is on and
Printer Sharing is disabled, as is everything else for that matter.

Any ideas for whats causing this problem, and how I can fix it?

Thanks.

It may simply be the cooling fan starting up and running and then shutting
down that you're hearing. I have an older model HP LaserJet here in my
office that does just that every once in awhile. It's normal for this
printer - per the manual. But next time it happens, see if it is the fan
running on yours.

It doesn't sound like its just the fan. I cqn hear the color cartridges
rotating.

I have a sneaking suspision that it could be the AE Basestation that
spontaneously sends out information which confuses the printer into
thinking it should run.

I haven't experienced the problem while the printer was disconnected from
everything but mains, but then I haven't tested it like that for more than
a few hours. Noone on comp.sys.mac.hardware.misc had anything to comment,
so I'm going to try having the printer turned on (but disconnected) over
the weekend and see how that goes.

It the problem persists, I'm going to complain to HP.

20 minutes and it started running, even though it was only connected to
mains. So it must be the printer :-/

Alright, the auto-calibration, which this seems to be about, can be
switched off so that the printer doesn't calibrate after 15-20 minutes,
though it required a Windows PC to do it. Apperantly they didn't bother
making OSX controls for this 'Mac compatible' product.

However no settings were on for the printer to do anything in the middle of
the night. When I asked HP about a solution for this problem, the replied:

"Thank you for contacting HP Customer Care. We suggest that you turn off
the printer when the printer is not in use."

Okay, then why did you even bother with a standby mode?

But what the hey, its actually brilliant. Thanks HP! "Pull the plug and
the printer wont make noise. While its on, we have no idea what it'll
do"...
