Dell express Vista upgrade program
Hi,
With my PC I got the chance to upgrade to Vista for around £10 or whatever. I can't use it yet, because I have apps which just won't work with it until they are upgraded. However, if I buy the Dell edition, is this a product that will allow me to do a clean install of the OS, or do I have to install the XP edition before installing Vista? After upgrading from NT to 2000, I never *ever* want to go down that route again! Andrew. |

Upgrade Vistas upgrade. The old 'feed it the old cd' and do a clean upgrade
process is gone. However, there is a simple workaround. You install Vista and DO NOT activate it. Then you install Vista again. It will see an acceptable OS (Vista) and reinstall itself. Weird, huh. or do I have to install the XP edition before installing Vista?
After upgrading from NT to 2000, I never *ever* want to go down that route again! If you read some of the computer press over the last few days, there has been a work-around to save you having to install XP first, and you can do it from a clean install. Simply don't enter a registration code when you install, and when you boot it'll ask again. Job done ! Microsoft have even said they have no intention of closing the loophole (see http://www.theinquirer.net and http://www.theregister.co.uk) Have you read any of the non-salesman-talk reviews about it though ? - it's time to swap to linux, and be shut of the abortion known as Microsoft forever ! http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut00...ista_cost.html http://badvista.fsf.org/ http://www.defectivebydesign.org/ |

There are variations on this from what you said to the do an install over the top of the existing clean install method which I am not happy with. If your method works that would be better - i.e, it asks for activation after the clean install. Have you read any of the non-salesman-talk reviews about it though ? - it's time to swap to linux, and be shut of the abortion known as Microsoft forever ! The DRM stuff is scary. However, at current although do a lot of Linux administration via SSH, I use a screen reader as am visually impaired and so have no choice for Windows, as the desktop on Linux is not really accessible at the moment (it works with Orca, but doesn't speak as much detail as Windows does). Actually, I do seem to remember someone called Deborah Scales, who ran the jfwlite website. I had heard that she passed away last year - sorry about that. I don't get involved much in the screen reader side of things, if it is working, I just use it, and use the computer for what I need to do. There are a lot of things/customisations you can do to it, but as I spend my work programing and working with computers, I just let it do its thing. It is very annoying when it fails though, but luckily I have some sight and so can see to do some things if it goes wrong. Andrew. |

Interesting to hear how she is known. She is missed by many. Tom |
