Default Proper ink for the HP 96 cartridge

Because of my high daily printing load, I have been refilling my
inkjet cartridges for years to keep costs down. I require only black
and white printing.

Recently I switched over from Canon Pixma to an HP printer using the
HP 96 black cartridge. At the time, I had a quart of pigmented black
ink in stock for the Canon and contacted my supplier to see if that
ink was compatible with the HP printer and 96 cartridge. I was told
that the Canon ink was a "thicker" formulation than that used in the
HP 86. However, my supplier suggested that I might go ahead and try
refilling the HP with the Canon ink since the worst thing that could
happen would be a clogged printhead requiring a new cartridge.

Since that time, I have refilled the original HP cartridge at least 50
times using the Canon pigmented ink with no problems whatsoever and no
deterioration in print quality. Having done some subsequent research
on the internet, I have learned that the HP 96 cartridge, as well as
some of the other newer cartridges in that series, is designed for the
new HP Vivera non-pigmented inks and that Hewlette Packard predicts
dire consequences if one attempts to use pigmented ink in these
cartridges.

I'm ready to re-order ink from my supplier and am a bit confused as to
what to order. The Vivera inks are proprietary to Hewlette Packard
and are obviously not available through third parties. I've had
excellent results with pigmented ink against the strong advice of
Hewlette Packard, However, am I flirting with danger? Should I
re-order regular non-pigmented black ink from now on? Has anyone out
there had any experience with this ... any thoughts or ideas? Thanx.

For starters, don't answer a question with another question and take an
English refresher class and get a good spellchecker. Wow, have you gone
back and read your post?

Your answers should have been directed at Paul and not at me.

Amazing. I find HP carts wear out or expire after around 10-15 refills no
mater what ink I use. If you can get 50 refills and the print quality is ok
then stick with it.

This was my first visit to this newsgroup. It's reassuring to know
that this group is no different from all the other usenet groups.
They all have just a few lurkers who are there to learn and offer
help. The majority of the responders get their jollies out of flaming
and sarcastic remarks. To date, out of five responses, only one was
an attempt to give constructive advice. It's amazing how otherwise
civilized people turn ugly when they have the advantage of hiding
their identities in cyberspace.

And, by the way, flamers, save your venom ... I'm off on the
never-ending search for a civil newsgroup. CWatters, thanks for the
response. You are the only one who gave any constructive advice.

By "wear out or expire" after 10-15 refills, I assume that you mean
that the print heads begin to clog and the print quality deteriorates.
It's been my experience that the number of successful refills are
directly proportional to the quality of the ink you purchase, This is
particularly the case with pigmented black ink.

These days, it seems like every dork that has an extra bay in his
garage is trying to get into the inkjet ink business. Most don't have
a clue and couldn't care less. Very few filter their inks properly.
Improper filtration of pigmented ink is, in my opinion, the primary
cause of printhead clogging. I would suggest finding another ink
vendor. You should be getting better longevity out of the HP
cartridges.
