How to use ordinary disks on Clariion..

hi..
I would like to use ordinary Seagate (purchased on the market) 80 pin
SCA disk on Clariion.So I have formatted 18 GB disk on Seagate's
Seatool as 520 byte per sector than inserted to Clariion but system
immediately showed OFF on Clariion Presantation utility..
Is there anybody have an idea?

EMC has certainly not hesitated to use special firmware on Seagate
drives in the past when it wanted to, so the lack of it may be the problem.

No, it doesn't work that way. You also just cant download the latest
EMC firmware and flash it on a standard seagate disk and expect the
vendor/product IDs to change. (Well, you will likely be able to flash
the firmware, but the vendor/product IDs, or drive serial number, or
many different things could change on you, which may render disk
useless unless you had the magic firmware build to reset everything.

You need a special firmware build to do this, and the people that have
it aren't going to release it to anybody or post it on some web site
as they will not only lose their jobs over this, but would suject
themselves to lawsuits and potential criminal charges for theft of
intellectual property.

EMC Drives are tested and approved by EMC at EMC in Southboro. Yes, they do
play with the firmware. No way to add third-party drives to ANY EMC array
that I have ever heard of .

You can also use fujustu dirves but that too have EMC Firmware in it

This does not sounds right.
SCA is a SCSI interface and Clariion is using a FC.......slight
difference:-) including number of pins.......
Additionally Clariion disks have different F/W.... not to mension that
disks from older systems such FC4500 /FC4700 are using two voltages (
+5V and +12V) while the newer systems use only +12 V

Anyway - it does not sounds as a good idea - you might void your
support contracts even if you will be able to use different disks.

CLARiiON disks are formatted with 520bytes per sector, normal disks are
512 bytes per sector. The additional 8 bytes are for CLARiiON internal
metadata use.
