Default yamaha 3200E burner problem in XP Pro

I've done a fresh install of XP and applied all service packs and patches.
I have a Yamaha 3200E CDRW as the only drive on the main board controller,
all other hard drives are on a Promise controller. The drive worked fine
for installing XP, but now while I'm in XP I'm having troubles just using it
as a reader. To install software I've had to use other CD-ROMs on the
system (scsi). It takes a long time to even browse the contents of a CD.

I was running Win2K and the drive worked flawlessly, reading and writing.
Has anyone seen this kind of problem before? Any ideas?

One more thing, there are multiple cdrom errors in the event log. I now the
drive is good because I used it to do a repair on XP (to replace the HAL
with the ACPI HAL) and even that went flawlessly until the protion of the
setup that runs from windows, then I had to put the XP disk in a different
drive. BTW, I was having these issues before running the repair.

I already have the most current firmware version. I re-downloaded and
re-ran it to make sure but still get the errors.

Any other suggestions?
