Sempron on A7N266-VM
A client's Athlon XP 1800+ CPU died the other day.
She doesn't need anything more powerful and XPs in any speed are becoming rare in my part of the world, so I thought I'd replace it with a Sempron 2200+. Since the A7N266-VM motherboard has a max FSB of 133/266, I expect the Sempron will plod along at roughly 1800+ speed. Are there any pitfalls that I have to watch out for ? And is there a better alternative ? The BIOS version is 1003, and in view of the modest performance requirement, I'm not eager to undertake a flash with its attendant risks. That is, unless there's some significant gain to be had. Thanks in advance for any input. |

I bought an AMD 64 recently (still waiting for all the parts for my system so I havent run it yet) and Im using a 1 gig Athlon - my first athlon I ever bought. Its surprisingly OK to use as long as I dont do anything really taxing like lots of WINRAR compression and other compression , video stuff. In fact I actually did use DVD decryptor and DVD2one with no problems though the DVD2one took about 8-10min longer than my old 3200 system. I think a 1800-2000 system is perfectly fine for many people as long as they arent cutting edge gamers and into specialized graphics, video etc. The BIOS version is 1003, and in view of the modest performance requirement, I'm not eager to undertake a flash with its attendant risks. That is, unless there's some significant gain to be had. They always say dont do it unless theres a real problem and the new bios claims to fix that problem. However Ive only had a problem 2 times when flashing a zillion times and that was on oddball system where I confused the wrong bios file and flashed it. Ive done the really windows based ASUS update flashers and ABIT ones lots of times though people really think those are "dangerous" with no problems. |
