Please help, my hard disk is making strange noises
My hard disk is making the reading/writing noise every two second and
it's bothering me. (I counted that there are 30 such noises in one minutes). There does not seems to be any problem with my hard disk other than the noises, I am able to read files from the hard disk and write files to the hard disk at the usual speed. My hard disk started making such annoying noises yesterday when I got invaded by msbb spyware. After removing it with Ad-Aware, the noises won't go away. I notice that if I press Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up a dialog box that show all tasks on my computer, the noises will stop, and it will start again after I click cancel to return to windows. Here are the tasks that is listed in the task dialog box: explorer, systray, zonealaram, avg??? (anti-virus software from www.grisoft.com). The tasks seems normal to me, I don't think the noises are caused by any of the tasks. My hard disk is more than 3 years old but I don't think the noises are caused by the old age because the hard disk works fine since I bought it 3 years ago. The hard disk only started making annoying noises yesterday. Please help, I want to know how to get rid of these noises which bother me. Thanks in advance. |

Copy your data ASAP and then prepare to buy a new disk drive. It's best of you turn you machine off RIGHT NOW. The less yuo use the machine the better chance you have of recovering your data. If you buy a new disk and install the OS you can then connect the old disk as a secondary and copy the data off it. If you're lucky. Otherwise`q and look for help from a friend that has a PC with the same operating system on it. Take the disk out of your machine and make it the You could copy data to a USB backpack, or burn a CD, but the less you use this disk the better your odds are. -- Al Dykes ----------- adykes at p a n i x . c o m |

Check your registry for hkey.....\\\windows\currentversion\run..... or use msconfig.exe, startup tab. I notice that if I press Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up a dialog box that show all tasks on my computer, the noises will stop, So it's the OS issueing some IO for some task. and it will start again after I click cancel to return to windows. My hard disk is more than 3 years old but I don't think the noises are caused by the old age because the hard disk works fine since I bought it 3 years ago. The hard disk only started making annoying noises yesterday. It is some software that's doing it. Please help, I want to know how to get rid of these noises which bother me. Thanks in advance. I use Taskinfo2000 (www.iarsn.com) to see what runs and is doing IO. |

Since you've got one, you might as well do a complete system scan with Ad-Aware and Spybot. -WD |

If slaving your drive to another computer and copying the data off doesn't work then you will need to try to have it sent off for data recovery. Unfortunately this can get quite expensive depending on what is wrong with the drive (over $1000). It all depends on how important the information is. If you need an online quote go to www.datarecovery.net.
