Linux Laptop Suppliers in the UK
Who in the UK sells (new) laptops with Linux pre-installed and supported?
I've checked out the Dell and HP on-line stores both of whom I thought did. Seems no longer to be the case. The common suppliers web sites also don't offer a choice of Linux instead of Windows XP. There are lots of web resources detailing other peoples experiences with all the various makes (e.g. the encyclopeadic www.linux-on-laptops.com and www.tuxmobil.org) but no suppliers. Are there any enlightened suppliers offering support? Or have I to roll my own as I suspect? Regards, Trevor deemed! |

Not answering your question, but seeing the ads for a Compaq, with 15" TFT, and CDRW/dvd drive for £800 at PCWorld has got me thinking about one, but without a guarantee of being able to run Linux, I wouldnt even consider it. Obviously the Compaq site is a waste of time, and trying to ask this question in PCWorld would be comical.("No we dont sell Linux, is that the new shoot-em up game? Oh, its an OS, sorry we only do modern s/ware") Alan. -- Change the 'minus' to 'plus' to reply by e-mail. http://www.dvatc.co.uk - Off-road Cycling in the North Midlands. |

The http supports any http browser, but she probably didn't know. |

I'd been there too following a suggestion in an old news item. There is nothing there but systems with Windows XP pre-installed. Stone the crows. So it is. Sorry for the wild goose chase. They did /used/ to offer Linux pre-loaded. Perhaps they still do if you ring up? ... Alternatively, http://www.ajp.co.uk used to sell the same hardware but without *any* OS for substantially less dosh. Similarly noting but Windows XP pre-installed stuff. Try phoning them too? Compaq (as did the other big names) used to say that Linux would work on much of their kit. Obviously the Compaq site is a waste of time, Sadly it has become so. But having worked for them (until literally the day before HP took over) I probably should not comment. ;-) ... and trying to ask this question in PCWorld would be comical. Asking any question in PC World is comical. ("No we dont sell Linux, is that the new shoot-em up game? Oh, its an OS, sorry we only do modern s/ware") That's the answer that I'd expect them to give even though they DO sell Linux; my local branch has Red Hat 9, Mandrake and (I think) SUSE for sale even their web site lists it. It got me thinking about going into the local store (Old Trafford) with a Knoppix disk. Wonder if they'd allow it? Darren -- Va Va Voom, Thierry? va va van Nistelrooy. |

Why... because it had two lines running across the screen ( yes, the ones that hold the aperature grill !!) Dave -- And you were born knowing all about ms windows....?? |
