Well, is it persistence, or madness?¿¿? 8=}

Actually, I usually do the opposite. Modify computers for "more speed", etc.
But sometimes I take the other path, and restore to OE. Besides, restoration
is lots more difficult, and sometimes locating parts is like a Global "
Where's Waldo?".
Amazingly, with enough patience, stuff usually turns up, and usually cheap
or free, and sometimes even close to home.

Eccentric computer tech/hobbyists are allowed to make up any excuse they
want for goofy behaviour anyway. :-)

And like I said before, anything other than a restoration route is lots
easier. The Packard Bell "way" is the more fun and challenging (frustrating)
way.

At least they don't have the week long boot up time like IBM PS/2 computers
do.

I have located some, but haven't "seen" any yet.

The Twin CD-ROM drive sticker is not needed, it's on the top drive. (

please
refer to the web page. :-)

But, it would be cool to locate another sticker.

You will need the controller card

Yes, I have the controller card. Computer is factory original except for

the
lower IDE CD-ROM. And extra memory.

Cheaper to go with Bens suggestion

Yes, and it's a whole lot easier. But that's not the point. I want to

return
the thing to OE condition. If I can. I'll find a CD-ROM eventually. I
already have some lines on free ones, and cheap ones.

The real trick is finding some that actually work.

Just as a thought reading this thread,

In July '96 I bought a PB Legend 4670 Tower computer. P120 16 MB Ram 1.2 GB
HD 1 MB Video Memory on board
4X CDR-273 SND-288AMSP PB 640 Mobo.

I upped the RAM to 64 (4 sticks of 16), upped the CPU to 200MMX with the
MrBIOS upgrade.

Mobo has a CELP slot and I found a good 512KB L2 cache stick.

Replaced the 1.2 GB with a 10 GB.

Still have the original documentation and all original software titles that
came with the machine, including the Windows95
Restore disks (floppy and CD) and the Navigator CD.

Also still Have the original Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor that I bought with
it. Monitor has Speakers hanging on the sides.

Have since given it to my nephew and he never uses it anymore and is
thinking of selling it, and putting the proceeds toward
a new machine. Last I saw, about 6 months ago, it still works good. Or as
good as that configuration can be in today's world.

Just as a thought, what might this system be worth today?

Had a lot of help over the years using that machine from Ben, Elector,
Metronid and others. Couldn't have gotten the
200MMX to work without their help.

Thanks for reading,
Dennis

My advice would be to put it on eBay and see what happens. But beware, most
of these sell for 99¢ to $20. Some fetch more of course, but it's rare.

( I only "pick" out the cheap ones. This *hobby* must remain under tight
financial control. :-)

Good luck !

Just testing the waters as the nephew was trying to decide how to proceed.

Mmph! Hard work selling it on eBay. Once sold, the item usually has to be
packed carefully to ship. That takes time, one reason why I do not sell
inexpensive trinkets on eBay, except the small ones that can be packed and
shipped easily. Selling on eBay for local pickup only is usually a sure way to
attract only tiny bids.

Dennis' nephew would be better off putting it on craigslist locally, and maybe
asking $20, hoping that some collector would buy it. Otherwise, the circuit
boards are worth 75 cents to a buck as electronic scrap sold in bulk, a couple
hundred pounds or more... Ben Myers

Although you are completely correct, shipping and packing are separate
issues. A seller deserves to be paid for carefully packing and shipping a
25lb plus computer. Just because some trinket sold for 99¢ doesn't mean that
it should be thrown in a box like most sellers do. I have paid lots extra so
that my trinket shows up intact. ( Hell, I paid $45 JUST FOR THE PACKING on
my PB 'Corner unit ! Frankly I didn't expect that, but I frightened the
seller. :-)

BUT.........BUT.....like you, I'm not willing to list some 99¢ trinket
either that I have to pack up. But if OTHER people want to do it, I expect
it to arrive safely. I realize I have to pay for it, but sometimes it's the
only way to find something.

Just part of the process. :-)
And another reason that I sometimes don't buy things I want. Some people try
to make money on shipping ( $27.95 to ship a CD-ROM drive for example ). So
I skip those items.

I will admit that most times stuff is NOT packed correctly. I have received
lots of damaged stuff, and I know it's because the seller "thinks" that they
didn't make any money on the deal, and they didn't charge enough for
shipping. But that is not MY fault.

Yep. I see lots of stuff that I buy at thrift stores and yard sales. Since
there is no "shipping" costs, I'm willing to pay a bit more because I get a
"part" with no shipping cost. I would buy the computer in a minute if it was
local. But when you add shipping cost to things, it usually puts it out of
my purchase zone for this kind of obsolete stuff.

One of the cool things about "tinkering" with and collecting old stuff like
Packard Bell computers is that they are cheap or free. It's the shipping
that costs. :-)

Hi Dennis !

Just out of curiosity, what would it cost to sell and ship that thing to
Loveland Ohio, 45140 ? ( just the computer and software, not the monitor. To
heavy to ship )

What case style is it?

It would be going to a good home, with 20 other Packard Bell's in my
collection.

Hello bob,

Shipping shouldn't be too high as I am in Kansas City.
As for price, I would have to check with my nephew to
see what he might want, even if he will sell without the
monitor. Might take a while to get an answer from him.
He is not real responsible, you know how kids are.
I say "kid" he is 21.

The System Credentials only says "Case Type: Tower"
It has 3 CD bays (1 used with the 4X CD drive) 1 floppy bay.
Mini-Tower with the color accent panels in front and sides.
(gray)

PB 640 mobo with riser card 3 ISA and 3 PCI slots.

I have sent a copy of the Mini-Tower user's guide to the email
addy in your header. Should answer most Q's.

Thanks,
Dennis
