Laptop woes FINAL :)
XP installed on the laptop
1)connected the hdd to the desktop pc. 2)Installed ms-dos 6.22 (creates a 2gig FAT partition) (start of drive) {start with ms-dos boot disk, format c:, sys c: (the hdd will now be bootable to ms-dos) } 3)Transferred the files from the xp cd to this partition. 4)Added smartdrive.exe and i also added all the files from a windows 98 boot disk (i think i only need the config.sys and the device=himem.sys line but i added it all just incase) 5)Put the hdd back into the laptop 6)booted to dos 7)smartdrv 8)cd i386 9)winnt.exe It installs the files (about 15 mins) (6hrs without smartdrive.exe) Then you choose the rest of the drive to install winxp on d: , as you can't delete the 2 GIG FAT partition as it has all your temp files there. and yehaa.. one laptop with xp installed no cd or floppy. Thanks all for help this week. |

(the fat partition xp is installing on is a primary partition (thanks : to partition magic) and i'll change the drive letters later to see if that : works. drivemapper? i guess i should read the instructions one day. : : ohh well all is well : : Glad to see you made it. If you read the help files for XP it will tell you how to use disk manager to change drive letters. cio claus |
