Default PC generating unusual "chirrupy" sound?

Hello everyone.

I'm getting some odd sounds out of my PC that suggest to me
I may have (or am about to have) some sort of hardware problem,
and I was hoping someone might be able to give me some advice
as to how to diagnose further. Read on if you're willing to try. :-)

0) For background only: my PC has made some "grinding" sounds
for a few minutes on start-up. This has been so infrequent
that I've filed it under "un-debuggable". :-)

1) Recently I installed "Hidden and Dangerous 2" (HD2), a PC
simulation game with 3D graphics. Most of the symptoms described
below are associated with HD2, but I don't think HD2 itself is
the culprit as I have one symptom independent of it.

2) The HD2 instalation went fine, but on running the game I found
the cinematic movies were very jerky. They use the .bik format,
and were smooth when run *outside* the game.

3) In actual gameplay, the 3D sections were smooth. However, I'd
get to a particular location and find that my PC made a
high-pitched "chirrupy" sound. Very much *not* the grinding sound
I associate with dying fans or hard-disk bearings. I could toggle
the sound on or off by being at a particular location or looking
in a particular direction.

4) The chirrupy sound played continually when I parked the game at
the start menu (which seems to be plain 2D).

5) At first I blamed HD2, but after much experimentation I found
another way to produce the sound. My Gigabyte board comes with
the "EasyTune4" application. I have it installed and running,
*not* to apply any overclocking, but to provide a quick look
at system temperature, fan-speed, etc. I found that if I held
the left mouse down whilst the pointer was over the title
bar of EasyTune4, then the chirrupy sound would play. Release
the button and it would stop.

6) The sound is not emanating from the speakers, they were turned
off once I started serious testing. (Before that, note that
the sound was loud enough to heard through the PC case and
over the wind noises etc of the HD2 game.)

7) I took the PC side-panel off, and attempted to find where the
sound came from. My *hunch* is that it is not coming from the
front of the case where the drives are, but from the rear where
the cards and CPU is. If I had to take a wild stab, I'd pick
the CPU, but with no confidence.

8) I had the sound playing when there were no CDs/DVDs in
their drives, and with only an intermittent flicker of
the hard-disk light.

9) I eliminated graphics-card fan noise as a possibility by
removing the two fans from the card and running (very
brief) tests ( (4) and (5) ).

10) I eliminated CPU fan noise as a possibility by holding
the fan still with my finger for a few seconds.

11) Apart from the movie stutter, when the chirrupy sound
was playing the PC seemed 'happy': I monitored CPU
temp whilst playing HD2 in a window, and the temp seemed
independent of the sound.

12) "Morrowind" (MW) is a RPG with a fairly inefficient engine
known to severely tax most PCs. I ran it immediately after
running HD2 and it ran fine, no chirrupy sounds.

13) I patched HD2 to the latest version, 1.2.0. This has no
impact on the sound. Nor does changing any of the game
graphic options (eg., running in a window, reducing
resolution, etc).

14) Abridged SiSoft Sandra report of my PC system specs is attached.

If you've read this far, thanks. :-)
If you know what the chirrupy sound is, or have suggestions
as to how I can nail it down I'd love to hear them.

Cheers,
Coda.

Cheers,
Coda.

***** End of Report *****

Not sure, but there are very few moving parts on a computer that

start up when the system is booted:. A: The hard Drive, The Power
Supply Fan, The CPU
fan. I had awful noise coming from the CPU fan and the Power Supply
fan, both. On the CPU fan, check that the wires on not rubbing on the
fan. Try a different power supply fan. Then listen to the hard drive
AFTER it is booted. Same noise There's a clue. Just trial and error,
but check the CPU fan FIRST! If a rubbing wire breaks, no fan, toasted
CPU!
