Default DVD drive "device is not ready" in XP

Under XP Pro, the DVD burner can't detect that a disc is present, whether
data or audio.

Bootable CDs can boot though, so the hardware's fine.

Reinstalling the driver doesn't help.

The mfg installer CD isn't any help, unless I can copy from their CD to a
flash drive on another PC.

Any other suggestions?

Hadn't encountered needing a driver for an optical drive in XP.

Maybe you could set a restore point or image C:, then try uninstalling
the driver in Device Manager, then rebooting.

The driver was already uninstalled via device manager, followed by a reboot.

What happens if you boot a linux live CD or a Bart etc ?

Does it detect a disk is present in that situation ?

That would allow you to distinguish between an OS and a hardware problem.

As I said, it does boot, and a Linux live CD is what I used.

I was about to try finding anything unusual in

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E 965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

but the drive now works.

Thanks anyway.

Just to make a note, yesterday I installed ASPI32 and then removed it,
because it didn't help. Nothing was in the event logs before that change,
but I probably didn't try reading a CD or looking at the logs again after
removing ASPI32, until now. At boot time, the system log says, "The
following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: ASPI32"

The ASPI files are definitely gone, but the installer loaded this reg file,
but didn't remove the keys/values when uninstalling.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\ASPI32]
"ErrorControl"=dword:00000001
"Start"=dword:00000001
"Type"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\ASPI32\Parameters]
"ExcludeMiniports"=""

What I meant was using the DVD drive after doing that, not just for the boot.

Then its unlikely to be an OS problem if you havent changed anything there.

Much more likely to be a flakey drive instead.

Thanks anyway.
