I've heard that the release date has been pushed back to the end of this year as a result of AMD's delay with their 64bit chip. Given that at the beginning of the year intel came out and said Prescott would ship in Q4 (previously just said "second half"), this is not really a revelation. I doubt it could be connected to AMD's delay since the intel announcement was months before AMD's. Of course lately I keep hearing rumors that rather than end of Q4, like I've always expected, intel might ship at the start of Q4. I have found no support for this yet, but I have heard the rumor from several directions. From what I've read about it, it sounds like quite a powerful processor, and there is speculation that it might be classified as a Pentium 5 or similar. What exactly have you read about it that makes it sound powerful? It is just a Willamette/Northwood on a new process with bigger cache and some new instructions, like every new generation/shrink. As for Pentium 5, the rumor rags have been tossing that out for over a year, but it makes no sense. With Prescott being just a faster P4 (and not faster at launch from what I've gathered) there is absolutely no reason to go burn the Pentium 5 name. I expect it to be yet another Pentium 4, maybe with some tagline at the end, like "Pentium with MMX Technology" it would be "Pentium 4 with BLAH Technology". After Prescott I expect a shift away from Pentium 4, but that's years away still. Alex -- My words are my own. They represent no other; they belong to no other. I have no insider info, but both inside and outside the company the details of Prescott seem to be well defined as a shrink of Northwood with additional cache and minor tweaks where circuit tricks became too difficult. As for Pentium 4 name, it just makes sense that it would stay the same, based on previous experience (Pentium III being the possible exception). Why might the name end with Prescott? Well look at the Pentium-M. It's much more cost effective for intel to make, it is a much cooler part (both by physics and awe-factor), and it is much more efficient than Pentium 4 in both power and performance (compare a Banias to a Northwood, or better yet a Dothan to a Prescott in a few months). I'm betting intel will shift focus to this chip family. I've already seen stuff on the web stating the Celeron line is switching again, from Pentium 4 to Pentium-M. I don't know if it is true, but it sounds good to me. Alex -- My words are my own. They represent no other; they belong to no other.
