Didn't intel try to corner the discrete graphics market in the late
90s with their i740 and i752 graphics card, which failed miserably and
couldn't keep up with technological advances made by Nvida, ATI, 3Dfx
and others.

Yup, I purchased an I740 board, a Diamond 3D Starfighter. It was 8meg agp,
but the 8meg was entirely for frame buffer. All textures were provided to
the card via agp texturing. In theory, a good idea, except the agp bus was
slow compared to the speed of onboard memory. The result was that everytime
new textures appeared on the screen, the game would stutter for 1-2sec. It
became extremely annoying after a while. This coupled with the fact that
there was no OpenGl driver at the time. I ended up returning the card.
