No boot with joy stick attached
I have an odd problem with my new xps 600. If I boot with the Logiteck joy stick plugged into a USB port, the system hangs after bios, right at it normally switches to the starting XP screen. The stick works fine if plugged in after the machine has booted to windows. I uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, with no help. A search of the Dell forums did not help. Any ideas? Thanks, -- Andrew Hall (Now reading Usenet in alt.sys.pc-clone.dell...) |

Some BIOSen will attempt to boot from really bizarre USB devices. I've seen this happen with HP AIO printers with USB card readers, for instance. Try setting the BIOS boot sequence to not boot from USB {floppies, etc} or to boot from them last and see what happens. |

Very odd, it was the "Inboard/USB Floppy" option that caused the problem. So if I ever want to boot to a floppy (memtest/bios update...) I will have to unplug the joystick and change the boot order. Thanks, I never would have thought of this. -- Andrew Hall (Now reading Usenet in alt.sys.pc-clone.dell...) |

William Yeah, why the BIOS thinks the joystick is a bootable USB device, or William why the joystick responds as a storage device is anyone's guess, but William I've seen this enough times that it rang a bell... I spoke too soon. I had booted it three times in a row with success, and thought all was well. Then the problem came back. I moved the joystick to the USB hub in my monitor, and it is working for now. But I do not trust it yet. Thanks again, -- Andrew Hall (Now reading Usenet in alt.sys.pc-clone.dell...) |

That might actually help, as the BIOS is unlikely to try to init external hubs, so it'll be unable to see the joystick. Let us know... |

I have not tested it any more, as I have a busy day. There is one other USB oddity, I need to have my wireless keyboard plugged into a specific USB slot to have the keyboard available during the boot. Otherwise it does not show up until XP starts. It was quite annoying before I figured out the workaround as I was doing a fair amount of stuff in the bios. -- Andrew Hall (Now reading Usenet in alt.sys.pc-clone.dell...) |

Why the joy stick blocks the boot, even with all floppy and USB drives taken out of the boot sequence remains a mystery, but the hub workaround seems robust.
