Western Digital My Book Premium edition installation

I have a Gateway Intel Pentium 4, 1600 Mhz computer with 512mb of
memory running Windows XP Service Pack 2. I just bought a Western
Ditigal Premium edition 250 gb external drive. It should be a plug
and play device, but my computer won't recognize it. I have gone to
the WD site and downloaded software, but no luck. It says I don't
need drivers.

Any idea why my computer won't recognize it?

Can you try the firewire interface ?

Can be something as basic as a screwed USB stack.

You could try deleting all the USB controllers in the Device Manager
and rebooting and see if that allows the drive to be seen.

Likely a hardware problem: The drive, the enclosure, the cable or
the USB port on the computer's side.

Unless its the last case, you need to return it.

this from the proper operation of all his other USB peripherals
