Default Thinkpad 390E - won't charge batteries

Any thinkpad gurus out there?

Got a TP 390E - I try two different LI-ION batteries in it, neither will EVER
start to charge (either with the unit off and plugged in, or when booted to
win2k). I updated the bios - still not charging.

I tried both of the batteries in another TP390X and both charged as normal, so
I don't think it is the battery.

Any theories welcome,
Rob
