teach them "media studies". Poor souls haven't got time to learn
anything useful.

Well, you don't even have to pay then. You pay when the bill arrives (or
within a certain number of days). Usually, the bill arrives after the
goods (but not always).

A very few companies have a credit card surcharge. I wouldn't generally
deal with them anyway.

Can't think of any other charges (as long as you can get a CC without a
monthly/annual fee).

Goods purchased on a credit card give the purchaser a claim against the CC.
But not if you purchased on a debit card. Though you might get some help
from the bank.

I was probably being unduly wary. You can (probably) deal quite safely with
the household names, e.g. Tesco, John Lewis, Boots, Sainsburys etc, without
using a credit card. There's not many others I would risk it with though.
And, as Bob Eager observed, if they want a CC surcharge, go elsewhere.

No - so long as you pay off the CC bill by the specified date.

Get a credit card and use it for *all* on-line purchases. Use the
debit card on-line *only* for paying your CC bill. Make sure you pay
off the CC bill by the specified date. Avoid any site that makes a
surcharge for CC payments - they might be OK but I wouldn't give then
the benefit of the doubt.

If, like the OP, you get ripped off you can get your money back via
the CC company. You can't do that with any other form of payment and
that is sufficient reason to use nothing but a CC for all on-line
purchases - and off-line for that matter. g

Finally, make sure that you pay off the CC bill by the specified date.

Hi all - thanks for the replies

In answer to a few questions I purchased the items 6 months ago using a
debit card. Both orders were approx £130. For the first few months I
just sent them emails requesting answers more than anything and heard
back from pcgiant a few months later saying they had found my order and
order number and had sent the items the day after - not true

Its worth mentioning that pcgiant claimed a site changeover was
responsible for the order mess up. This seems to be true as similar
complaints about them in the nochex forum were made around the same
month period. As for epcbuyer I havnt heard a single thing from them -
they just took the money.

As for what they teach in schools I believe it has for the most part
been a waste of time. Looking back now we could have done with lessons
on filling out forms, dealing with banks and the biggest thing - the
long term consequenses of taking out loans!

That's a shame - as others have said get a credit card and use it exclusively
for online shopping. In fact I have one I only use online and another for
everything else. This gives you much more protection when things go wrong - the
credit card company will chase the company involved on your behalf when you
dispute the transaction. And they have way more leverage than you.

Well emails are good if they are getting read and responded to. At this stage I
would send a letter saying that you give them 14 days to fulfill your contract
else you will issue proceedings. Send it recorded delivery. You could at this
stage include a draft of your small claim form...

OK now we're started on this, schools *should* teach stuff that will prove
useful, that your parents may not be able to, viz

basic plumbing
basic home wiring
how a mortgage works
PC maintenance
painting (house)
putting up shelves

I could go on. I have no idea if these are touched on in schools now, only that
the 20 somethings I know have little clue on any of them....
