COMPAQ Presario 5640 : Windows2000 shutdown problem ?
Hello again,
I have some problems when shutting my computer down using windows2000. The problem is, when I want to shut it down, it ends up with the screen saying "It is now safe to turn your computer off". It does NOT turn itself off completely like Windows98 did which I had before. Now, I have to push the button on the front to turn it off, but then it reboots after about 30 minutes. It is similar to when the computer hung in windows98 and I would hold the front ON/OFF button down for 15 secs. Then it would restart after about 30 minutes. To completely turn it off, with Windows2000, I have to flip the powerswitch on the backside of the computer. This procedure is very annoying to me. How can I get Windows 2000 to shut the computer off COMPLETELY when I choose the option "Shut down" ? I know Microsoft had problems with their shutdown functionality in Windows98 and I suspect this is something similar. Probably it is easy to fix. I just wonder if anyone has any good idea of what I need to do to get it to shutdown completely using this otherwise excellent Windows2000 (compared to Windows98). By the way, when I installed Windows2000 I did a clean install, by formatting the HD completely so there are no traces of windows98 left. Thanks in advance, Mattias P.S. Go into Control Panel. Bring up the Power Applet. On your machine there will
be an APM tab (your machine does not support ACPI, but does support APM). There will be a checkbox on that tab to enable APM. Your machine will now shut down properly. I have no idea why this is not the default on Windows 2000, but it's not. Tom "Mattias Svensson" wrote in message ... Similar, accomplishes the same thing. Right Click "My Computer"
Choose properties. Click on "Hardware" tab and then "Device Manager" Click on "view" and "show hidden devices". You will see APM with a red X over it, right click on it and choose "enable". It only does this on AT style machines with the extra Power switch connector. |

Although I checked if it "unchecked" the option in the dialogbox Tom described. Cheers, Mattias |
