How to identify loose Athlon CPU?
I currently have an Abit KT7-Raid socket7 board with an Athlon T-bird
850 in it. I mentioned to a friend at work that I really should upgrade my cpu to the max 1.4ghz (100mhz FSB) my board would take since the cpu would cost less than $50 these days.. He said he thought he had a spare 1.2 or 1.4ghz at home and actually ended up bringing it in for me. It's a loose cpu with only what appears to be a serial # on a "Warranty Void if removed" sticker on it... Searching the web leads me to believe the retail box it came in had a black card with the specs on it... Of course, all I have is the cpu.,.. Is there any way to tell the speed of this cpu w/o installing a heatsink on the new cpu and installing it? If it's a 200mhz FSB, will it damage my board? will it still work, but just not as efficiently as if in were in a 200mhz FSB board? I know the quickest way to find out part of what I wanna know would be just to put it in, but while my case is always open, I've always had a healthy fear of screwin with the cpu if not 100% needed. Oh yeah... also, the cpu core has some remenents of what look like the thermal pad the heat sink had on it.. Would putting a dab of Arctic SIlver III on it before attaching the heat sink work?, or so I somehow very carefully need to clean up the cpu core? (And I know... Less is better when it comes to thermal paste, altho I've never used it before) Thanks in advance for any info/advice. Tony! |

Go to link in sig. The PN should be on the core. Once you clean it, you should be able to see it. If not, then you can still tell by looking at the bridges and determining the default multiplier, etc. This might help. http://www.amdboard.com/amdid.html -- Abit KT7-Raid (KT133) Tbred B core CPU @2400MHz (24x100FSB) http://mysite.verizon.net/res0exft/cpu.html |

I didn't even notice the fine print under the thermal pad leftover gook. How should I go about cleaning the core? Rubbing alcohol on a qtip? Thanks again! Tony! |

Rubbing alcohol on a qtip? I wash mine in the sink with the dishes and use whichever brush it takes to get it clean. Rinse and dry well. But I don't use the pads either. If it's stuck on, I'd scrap it off with a razor blade. I'm kinda low tech when it comes to cleaning.:-) Be careful and don't loose the foam pads. For real? I never see you joke around so..... Yep, for real. I've used WD40, Paint and Varnish removers to get the old pads off, and Windex for final clean up a few times. It works. ;p Used to use aftershave to remove flux from pcb's. Mennen works great and then washing them in dishwater removed most of the aftershave, but left enough so the boards smelled good too (for real).:-) -- Abit KT7-Raid (KT133) Tbred B core CPU @2400MHz (24x100FSB) http://mysite.verizon.net/res0exft/cpu.html |
