Default no post, no beeps...cpu failure?

Hi All,

I just put together an old AMD Athlon 1 Gig chip with a stick of 256DDR ram,
an old WDC HDD, a new case, and a new Gigabyte GA-7VKMP mobo.

After about an hour's worth of computing, (installing win2K, service packs,
browsing, etc) I was setting up a Win2K/RH7.1 dualboot, when I restarted the
machine.

Then, nothing. After restart, no post, no beep, nothing. The cpu fan is
running, the cdrom has power, the hard disk has power, the ram should be
fine (because if it wasn't, I'd at least get some kind of error on the post
test, right?).

I do have one suspect. . . the cpu. I did not use thermal compound when
seating the chip/heatsink.

Does this sound like a cpu failure to you all? While snooping around the
bios, I did observe cpu temps of around 48-53 degrees celsius, which I
believe are all within reasonable limits, correct?

thanks,
Otto

Oh dear!!!! This definitely sounds like CPU failure. Sorry mate, but not
using thermal compound when fitting the heatsink is asking for trouble.

The BIOS reading of 53C sounds a bit high to me, as this reading will not be
too far from idle temps. When you put the CPU under full load it's bound to
rise another 15-25C and with no thermal compound perhaps more. This could
definitely have taken your CPU into the meltdown zone.

However there is a small possibility that it could be another component
"dragging" the system down.

Unplug all unnecessary components - e.g. all IDE drives, floppy drive, all
PCI cards and leave only the video card. Now see if you can power up the
system. If you can - STOP - power down the system, remove the Heatsink and
get some thermal grease in there fast! Once you have fitted the heatsink/fan
start adding components one by one and see what one causes the fault.

Sorry to be so negative about this however things really don't look good.

Best of luck.

It could be a dead CPU, power supply, or something else. If you didn't
use thermal compound or a pad you very well could have killed the CPU,
especially if you used a cheep rough heatsink. Those old Athlon's ran
hot to start with. It doesn't make sense not to install the heatsink
properly.
